When we first moved to Florida, we expected the cost of living to be quite a bit higher than it was in Arkansas.

But we were surprised to find that other than the cost of home on the island, the daily expenses were about the same or even less.

For example - there are only about 4 months of the year that you need to run either heat or air conditioning in your home.  This means 8 months of low utility bills.

Another example is food prices - these turned out to be lower than we were used to.  Seems a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables are grown year round in Florida, and this local supply means lower prices and abundance.

And then there is the fact that there are no state income taxes in Florida - this can be a pretty significant cost savings.

True, automobile fuel prices are a little higher here - as the state has higher taxes on gasoline and diesel.  But that's not a problem unless you have to drive a lot.

Overall, we've found the cost of living to lower than expected - especially considering the lifestyle benefits of living in paradise!
